Develop Self

I have decided to pursue my study and decided to take Leadership and people management with Mendaki.

The module started with learning bout oneself.
Understanding the need of communication and vision, mission and core value of the organisation one working at.

I must admit that I prefer to listen than talking. Listening is also part of communication.
By listening, one can understand more. It is also about adapting to the situation and the scenario. With that one will have lesser barrier.
Being presenter also part of communication. I used to have stage fright and stutters to my audiences.
With lots of practices, observing people giving speech or classes and with good tips given by trainers with every courses I attended, I manage to overcome my issues.
While giving presentation,
  • Try use simple language
  • Minimal the slides/words so that the presentation wont get too lengthy
  • Stand/Face the audience ( Show sincerity and respect to the audience)
  • Engage and acknowledge the audience. ( Eye contact)
  • Gather feedback. (Ask question)
With experience working with GOV, SME and MNC sectors, there are a lot of valuable encounters and experiences in working culture, leadership styles and surrounding.
While just being merely receptionist and admin for the SME, I jumped to work in Gov sector.
Though the task in Gov sector simply just doing administration, I always try to go extra mile buy trying to see on how to simplify processes and also at same time I was appointed to be responsible for the interns and part timers in the section.
Here, I realize its not easy to be a good leader and respects are to be earn.
Thankfully, I don't have much issue performing my duty as I do always plan the task for the team and always seek feedback.
I also always show good example and show appreciation towards the team by saying

  • Good Job
  • Excellent
  • Thank you
  • Keep up the good work

Acknowledging the hard-works the team do by saying
"Thank you for your hard-work"
I heard this culture is being adapted though I have left the organization 7 years now.
If there is a mistake or any area of improvement, I use the hamburger approach.
Tried not to penalize or belittle them.

Currently I'm working in a MNC. With multiple races and culture,we do respect each other.
As for the working culture, the leader always being transparent and casket down the information and any instruction clearly. There are also channels to give feedback such ans feedback box or email address where one can send feedback.
With various departments and divisions, we have a motto which is always being emphasis zero defect.
*Do right the first time*

Though I believe that I can make a good leader, there is always room for improvement and strive to be better.
While striving to be better, in life, there always decision to be made.
I have made decision using both proactive and reactive decision.
Thankfully, even using both method of decision, I always refer back to the model below.

I left the job in SME after being looked down by the boss. I always believe one can always upgrade and try new things. Commented that I can only answer phone calls and arrange interviews, its not a fair statement. Disappointed a CEO can think and being vocal that way. Being emotional, I tender my resignation with 2 week notice. Only after tendering I realized that I don't have a job and back up plan should I didn't have any job after the notice period.
Thankfully, I manage to secure the job in the GOV sector which immediate opening.

One of my proactive decision is continue to take my diploma. From then till now, I have been taking up courses be it soft skills or technical.

Being a Leader not only being recognized by the upper hands, most important is the subordinate.
without support by the subordinates, one can never be a good leader.
There are obviously alot of way to be a good leader, eg

  • Learning from others
  • Keeping journal
  • Creating chance for feedback
  • Developing Plans
  • Knowledgeable on the statutory rules such as WSH and WMC
I end this entry for Module Develop Self with the quote
*Management is about arranging and telling,
Leadership is about nurturing and enhancing*
